The Project Engineer will support operations through the engineering, design, optimization, and execution of food-manufacturing production systems. The role focuses on improving productivity, efficiency, quality, and safety across tortilla, chip, and related product lines. Responsibilities include designing and integrating mechanical, electrical, communications, and control systems; developing and optimizing plant layouts; managing project implementation; and ensuring compliance with regulatory and operational requirements. Duties and responsibilities include the following:

 

    • Design, analyze, and optimize food-production systems, including mixing, forming, baking, frying, packaging, and material-handling lines, to improve throughput, efficiency, and cost performance.
    • Lead the engineering design and installation of mechanical, electrical, communications, and automation/control systems for new or upgraded production lines.
    • Develop detailed process workflows, capacity analyses, efficiency models, and line-balance calculations to support continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Prepare and update plant and production-line layouts using AutoCAD, including “as-built” documentation following project completion.
    • Manage end-to-end project execution, including scope definition, engineering planning, resource allocation, scheduling, and coordination with plant personnel.
    • Oversee equipment procurement, specification review, vendor selection, competitive bidding, and evaluation of specialized food-industry machinery.
    • Direct and supervise contractors and technical personnel performing mechanical, electrical, and controls installations, ensuring adherence to engineering standards and safety requirements.
    • Implement, monitor, and verify projects for compliance with FDA, OSHA, EPA, USDA, EEO, and internal corporate standards.
    • Manage capital expenditure (CapEx) projects, including budget development, cost estimation, financial tracking, and reporting on project progress and performance.
    • Conduct financial and operational analyses to support project justification, process improvements, and equipment selection.
    • Coordinate cross-functional activities between Corporate Engineering, GPS, plant management, and external vendors to ensure successful project execution.
    • Support continuous-improvement initiatives through process troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and engineering corrective-action plans.
    • Complete project close-out activities, including accounting reconciliation, documentation, contractor evaluation, and final engineering reports.

 

Position requires up to 20% domestic travel to company locations, plants, and factories within the United States.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Requires a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field plus two years of experience in the job offered or in an engineering role within a manufacturing environment. Requires two years of experience in the following:

 

    1. Designing or optimizing industrial production systems;
    2. Mechanical, electrical, and control-system integration;
    3. Project management in industrial settings;
    4. Reading and developing technical layouts and engineering drawings;
    5. Applying industrial engineering principles (process improvement, efficiency, throughput optimization);
    6. Regulatory compliance in industrial operations;
    7. Managing capital-expenditure (CapEx) projects;
    8. Experience with industrial equipment procurement and vendor evaluation.
