This position is responsible for conducting fundamental economic analysis and communicating findings to Director of Commodities. The Commodity Analyst will also advocate long or short trading positions, with risk assessment, based on the objective analysis of market data. The analyst must challenge positions inconsistent with economic facts, ensure that merchandising and marketing decisions are made with the full consideration of fundamental information and support Supply Chain in providing accurate decision-making information across other business units/functions.
This position conducts general business, financial and commodity analyses in support of business decisions relating to the Supply Chain Function including Purchasing, Commodities, Transportation, and Warehousing.
- Conduct fundamental analysis and forecast specific supply and demand components of the US/North American Wheat, Corn, Soy S&D, their relationship(s) to the world supply and demand situation, help create and support/maintain the GTA (Global Trading Analytics) database. Draw charts and graphs, using computer spreadsheets, to illustrate technical reports.
- Advocate views on prospective flat prices, intra/inter-market spreads, and cross-commodity spread based on the objective analysis of market data. Challenge positions inconsistent with economic facts.
- Participate in the platform and individual business unit studies as needed. Contribute significantly to the long-term forecast process. Make effective presentations to customers as requested by management.
- Monitor & analyze the impact of political events and government programs on food grain markets. Monitor developments in the fields of industrial technology, business, Ag finance, and economic theory.
- Maintain relationships with both USDA and trade personnel.
- Interpret data on price, yield, stability, economic influences, and other factors affecting risk management programs.
- Inform risk management decisions by analyzing financial information to forecast business, industry, or economic conditions.
- Monitor fundamental economic, industrial, and corporate developments by analyzing information from financial publications and services, government agencies, trade publications, company sources, or personal interviews.
- Present oral or written reports on general economic trends.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in economics, Business, Analytics, or Finance related discipline plus a minimum of 1 year of experience in trading analytics or risk management. Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office products, strong data management skills, working statistics base (emphasis on regression), and understanding of market dynamics
- Ability to communicate complex verbal and written messages in a concise way.
- Team player who is driven to win yet able to handle adversity.
- Willingness to take risks and utilize fundamental research to influence trading positions.
- Advanced database and modeling skills.
- Working understanding of production agriculture and agronomy is highly preferred.
- Experience in trading analytics preferred.
